Get Ready for Warroad

Warroad is a “show up and do the thing” kind of town — whether that’s camping up north, fishing the lake, drilling holes for ice season, hunting the woods, roaring through winter trails, or lacing skates for a hockey weekend. Use this page to get your plan and gear dialed in.

Gear lists for a Warroad trip

Six quick checklists to make the trip smoother. Pack smart, stay comfortable, and spend your time doing the fun part — not hunting down forgotten essentials.

1) Camping

  • Tent + footprint/tarp, stakes, and a small mallet.
  • Sleeping bag rated for the season + sleeping pad (insulation matters up north).
  • Layers: base layer, warm mid-layer, and a wind/rain shell.
  • Headlamp + extra batteries; lantern if you like camp light.
  • Bug spray, sunscreen, and a basic first-aid kit.
  • Cooler + ice plan, camp stove/fuel, and easy meals/snacks.
  • Weather-ready extras: gloves, beanie, and dry socks.

2) Fishing

  • Fishing license (and know the local regs for the season and species).
  • Rod/reel setup(s) + spare line; pliers, forceps, and cutters.
  • Tackle box basics: hooks, weights, bobbers, jigs, and a few proven lures.
  • Life jacket and a plan for changing weather (wind can build fast).
  • Polarized sunglasses and a hat for glare and comfort.
  • Measuring tape + cooler/ice if you’re keeping fish.
  • Phone battery pack and offline map coverage as a backup.

3) Ice Fishing

  • Ice auger (manual or powered) + spud bar/ice chisel for checking thickness.
  • Ice shelter (optional) + heater with safe ventilation (if used).
  • Ice safety: picks/awls, throw rope, cleats, and a flotation suit if you have one.
  • Ice rod/reel + jig box (small jigs, spoons, waxies/minnows as needed).
  • Bucket or sled to haul gear + insulated seat for comfort.
  • Hand warmers, waterproof gloves, and extra socks.
  • Headlamp and a plan for early darkness in winter.

4) Playing Hockey

  • Skates (freshly sharpened) + extra laces and skate guards.
  • Stick(s), tape, wax, and spare socks/undergarments.
  • Helmet, gloves, shin pads, elbows, shoulder pads (bring what you normally play in).
  • Warm-up layers for the cold walk-in/out + a beanie for after.
  • Water bottle + electrolytes; hockey weekends can be deceptively draining.
  • Small repair kit: screwdriver, spare hardware, and scissors.
  • Optional: shower kit and flip-flops if you’re using locker rooms.

5) Hunting

  • Appropriate license/tags and a plan to follow season rules and land access.
  • Blaze orange (when required) and layered insulation for long sits.
  • Boots suited for wet/cold conditions + extra socks and hand warmers.
  • Rangefinder or binoculars; small field kit (knife, gloves, game bags).
  • Navigation: phone/offline maps or GPS, plus a backup battery.
  • Pack essentials: water, snacks, first-aid, and a headlamp.
  • Weather protection: windproof shell, neck gaiter, and rain gear if needed.

6) Snowmobiling

  • Helmet, goggles, and cold-rated gloves (plus a spare pair).
  • Layer system: warm base + insulated mid + windproof outer shell.
  • Boots built for cold + dry socks; neck gaiter/balaclava.
  • Trail plan: map app, route notes, and a realistic fuel/stop plan.
  • Emergency basics: tool kit, tow strap, first-aid, and a flashlight/headlamp.
  • Phone mount or secure pocket + battery pack (cold drains batteries fast).
  • Optional but smart: hand/foot warmers and a small thermos.
